Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Create the Brim: Each student will use a paper plate as the brim of their sombrero. They can decorate it now with markers, crayons, or colored pencils. Encourage them to use bright, festive colors!
  2. Make the Crown:
    • Cut a circle out of construction paper (approximately 4-6 inches in diameter, depending on the desired size of the crown).
    • Cut strips of construction paper about 1-2 inches wide and several inches long. These will form the sides of the sombrero’s crown.
    • Glue the strips around the edge of the paper circle, standing them upright to create a cylindrical shape. Overlap the ends of the strips to secure them.
  3. Attach the Crown to the Brim: Apply glue to the bottom edge of the paper crown and carefully attach it to the center of the paper plate brim. Press down gently and allow the glue to dry.
  4. Decorate Your Sombrero! Now comes the fun part! Encourage students to personalize their sombreros using:
    • Colorful patterns: Stripes, dots, zigzags on the brim and crown.
    • Yarn tassels: Punch holes around the edge of the brim and tie colorful yarn pieces to create dangling tassels.
    • Glitter: Add some sparkle for a festive touch.
    • Stickers: Use themed stickers or any fun designs.
