This fall yarn leaf project can turn into a messy little monster if you’re not careful, but sometimes that also builds some of the best core memories for kids in the classroom! Fall leaf yarn painting will help with hand-eye coordination and might be best if geared towards 4-5th graders. There is a bit more structure to the project overall and requires some listening and fine motor skills not yet developed in younger grades, BUT it could definitely be easily adapted if you’re up for it!

Supplies Required:

  • Paper Plate
    Leaves
    Sharpie
    Paint in Fall Colors
    Yarn
    Scissors

Fall Leaf Yarn Painting-How to:

Choose a large leaf and place it at the center of your paper plate. Take your Sharpie and draw the outline of the leaf and its stem onto the paper plate. In a small bowl, put a few drops of your different fall paint colors and place a piece of yarn in the bowl. Saturate it with the paints and place it on your leaf outline.

Don’t worry about laying it straight. Situate it so that it covers as much of the leaf outline as possible. Repeat this step with the second piece of yarn. Make sure you leave the ends hanging over the bottom of the paper plate. Take a second paper plate and place it on top of your yarn.

Pull the pieces of yarn out while securing the top paper plate with your other hand. While pulling out the strings, be sure to move them around so that the paint covers the entire leaf outline. When you remove the top plate if you want to add more paint, just repeat the process until you are satisfied with the final product. Once it’s just right, cut out the outline of your leaf and enjoy the mix of fall colors in the final product!
